Mulching your garden every year is an important part of properly maintaining and taking care of your property landscape. Mulching helps to keep moisture in the soil, regulates soil temperature, and can help to prevent weed growth. Mulch also adds organic matter to the soil, which is beneficial for plant growth.

When choosing mulch for your garden, it is important to consider the types of plants you have. Some mulches (yes, the plural of mulch is "mulches") are better suited for certain plants than others. For example, hardwood mulch is a good choice for perennials, while straw is better for annuals.

There are many different types of mulch available, such as bark, compost, leaves, pine needles, and straw. Mulch can be purchased at local garden stores or home improvement stores. You can also create your own mulch by composting leaves or grass clippings.

Mulches can come in a variety of colors to both compliment the landscaping visuals, as well as the visuals of your surrounding home and property. Colors like Black, Red, and Brown are commonly chosen.

Mulches may also come in a variety ranging from organic, to treated with weed preventatives. This is also another important consideration when choosing the right mulch for your yard. Now let’s talk about how to properly install or lay mulch in your garden bed:

The first step is to remove any old Mulch or Debris from the garden bed. This can be done with a rake, shovel, or your hands.

Once the area is clean, it’s time to add new Mulch. Begin by spreading Mulch evenly over the entire surface of the garden bed. Then use a rake or your hands to smooth it out. The mulch layer should be between 1.5-3 inches in depth depending on what is needed in your garden that year. (Our team can easily help you figure this out if you're unsure).

If you are using Mulch that has been treated with a weed preventative, be sure to read the directions carefully on how to apply it. Most weed preventatives require that you apply a thinner layer of Mulch. It's also a wise idea to wear gloves when handling anything that is chemically treated.

That's all there is to it! Installing Mulch is an easy way to improve the appearance of your garden, and can also help to improve plant growth.
